I’m proud to be a member of the IWSN, equipped with a Masters degree in Occupational Health, Safety and Ergonomics and 18 years of representing the health and safety interests of employees.
I have been injured at work however with my union delegate and HSR training I was able to navigate the workcover system successfully.
Since then, I have used this skill and knowledge to support and assist injured workers. In addition to this, I have been working as a disability development support worker since 1998.
It has been my experience that the most cost effective return to work intervention is support from employers throughout the return to work process. To provide a supportive and positive environment. I try to make sure that the employer is discouraged from playing the blame game. I advise workers of their rights as well as their responsibilities and encourage both the employer and injured worker to address and resolve outstanding issues.
My advice to injured workers is: Know your rights and ask for help. Remember, you are not alone.
